Pure African black soap · Ghana

Cocoasa

Cocoa earth. Love your skin.

Say it ko-ko-AH-sa

Handmade black soap from the ash of roasted cocoa pods and raw shea butter, cured slowly the way it has been made in Ghana for generations.

The name

Two words, one soap

Cocoathe pod
+
AsaaseTwi for earth
=
Cocoasacocoa earth

Ghana is one of the world's great cocoa-growing countries. Long before the beans became chocolate, the pods left behind on the farm were burned to ash and turned into soap. Cocoasa is named for both halves of that story: the cocoa, and the earth it grows from.

How it's made

From cocoa farm to soap bar

Gather the pods

Empty cocoa pods are collected after harvest and dried in the sun.

Roast to ash

The dried pods are roasted until they turn to a fine, dark ash. This is what gives black soap its colour.

Mix with shea

The ash is stirred by hand into raw shea butter and plant oils until it thickens.

Cure for weeks

Each bar rests for four to six weeks to harden and mellow before it is wrapped.

Ingredients

Short list, nothing hidden

  • KookooCocoa pod ash

The natural base that turns the oils into soap and gives the bar its deep brown-black colour.

  • NkutoShea butter

Rich and creamy, it leaves skin feeling soft rather than tight after washing.

  • NgoPlant oils

Oils that help the soap lather and cleanse gently.

Full ingredients list to be confirmed before launch.

Our story

We grew up with black soap by the sink. We wanted to share it with the world, made properly and wrapped with pride.

Cocoasa began at home in Ghana, with a family recipe and a love for honest, natural skincare. Every bar is made in small batches, weighed by hand and wrapped in paper, and we're only just getting started. That's why your opinion matters so much to us.

How to use

A little goes a long way

Lather in your hands

Rub the bar between wet hands or on a cloth rather than straight on the skin. It's gentler and the bar lasts longer.

Rinse well

Wash face or body, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Follow with a moisturiser if your skin feels dry.

Start slowly

New to black soap? Use it once a day for the first week. If any irritation appears, stop using it.
